After the Revolution became a clerk in the Supreme Court at Boston. Aptd an Ensign and served in Shay's Rebellion. Practiced law at Hallowell, Me. Made trip to London. In 1798 aptd Capt of Artillery in what is now the regular army. He evidently stood high in the army, and although his rank was only a Capt, he was selected to receive the cession of Upper Louisiana under the direct authority of Gov Clairborne at New Orleans. Joined with Stoddard were the later famous explorers, Lewis and Clarke. On Mch 9, 1804, the American flag was first hoisted over what is now Missouri, Capt Stoddard receiving possession of the province, which he next day transferred to the United States and he became the tirst Civil Commandant (or Governor), of what is now Missouri. After his residence and rule at St Louis, he served at eastern posts, during which time he wrote his great work, "Sketches, Historical and Descriptive, of Louisiana." published by Matthew Carey, Philadelphia, in 1812. During this year he was at Fort Columbus, N. Y. and received promotion to the grade of Maj. The next year found him on duty at Fort Meigs, where he died. Ref: S. A. R. Came to Conn 1802 as farmer. Was sheriff 2 terms. The type of man is shown in the statement which he made when Eleazar Gilson applied for pension: "1 declare on the honor of an old Revolutionary officer, that I know Eleazar to have been an officer in the 5th Continental Regt, 2nd Brig, fr 1777 to 1780, and know him to be a man of truth."
