MI: "In memory of Nathaniel Sawyer, born March 12, 1757, and departed on March 11, 1813, age 56 years. He was a man of undaunted courage and was a soldier in the Revolution. He was one of the pioneers in the wilds of Ohio, and shared the dangers of a frontier settlement through a long and bloody Indian War. He was a kind, affectionate and industrious parent. Trusted friend of George Washington, Gen Greene and other Revolutionary generals. Commissioned by President Washington as accountant to the Dept of War on Apr 17, 1795. Received second commission fr the President, and another from President Adams. Resigned this office in 1815, having served the government in civil and military capacity for nearly 40 years. President Madison offered him any office within his gift if he would remain in the service. Govt gave him a grant of 4297 acres, at the head waters of the Muskingum river in Coshocton Co for his services. To this land he removed his family in 1820, taking into Ohio the first family carriage, his colored servants, and solid silver to set a table for twenty.
