McCUNE, THOMAS, COL., (Jefferson Co.)

A part of 1776-1778-1780. Col McCune was one of the volunteers of Delaware in the Revolution who took il2,500 in booty fr the British, and as the army under Washington was in extreme distress, it was voted as a supply for the use of the army, and immediately conveyed to it. Br July 12, 1756, Huntington Co, Delaware. Parents: James and Elizabeth McCune. Mar Mary Brady, dau of Gen Joseph Brady, Apr 5, 1785. Children: Mary, Elizabeth, James, Sarah, Mary, Jane, Marcaret, Joseph, William. (Mary occurs twice—typist.) D April 12, 1842 in Warren Twp, Jefferson Co. Oak Grove Graveyard, one mile east of Mt Pleasant O. MI: "Col Thomas McCune. 17.56-1842." Steubenville D. A. R. with official marker. July 4, 1922. Forty-five vears of age Col McCune moved to Ohio, and he was one of those early pioneers who opened the wilderness, and made a home and "local habitation" for generations to come. He was one of Nature's nobility; ever kindhearted as a parent, the friend of man, and an uncompromising Democrat. He represented the people of Jefferson Co for some yrs in the legislature of the state, he was a leading member of the Presbyterian church and fulfilled his duties in life as a mChristian and patriot. He died full of yrs, and was bur with the honors of war. Peace to the ashes of the veteran citizen, and patriotic soldier of the Revolution. A large circle of relatives and friends mourn his loss; let them cherish his manifold virtues, and may we all, when overtaken by death, be found as innocent and free fr faults, as the honest old warrior who fought for human rights and the blessings of liberty. Came to Ohio fr Va where he served as Indian spy, 1790 to 1792, in 1819, settled in Jackson Co where he became one of the first Justices of the peace, until he was very old, he taught country school north of Gallia and Washington stations. He is pictured in old accounts as a very old man with long white hair. Mention is also made of Levi McDaniel baptizing persons at the creek bottoms in country church gatherings. MILLER, ELIAS, (Butler Co.)

When a boy, rode a pack horse in General Wayne's expedition, which met defeat at the hands of the Indians. In those days the supplies of the expedition were carried on pack horses. Miller rode a horse, driving two heavily burdened horses in front of him. It was owing to this that he was able to crouch flat on his horse and escape. During this engagement the company stopped at the home of Ann Gregory, for refreshments, she having frequently entertained Wayne, and on her tombstone near Le Sourdsville is the following inscription: "Here lies the body of one most loved. She has ascended to her home above. Her table was always filled with the best and Anthony Wayne was often her guest."
