Enrolled in 1779 for the term of the war in Capt James Lee's Company, Second Continental Artillery (see Pa Archives, Series 5, Vol 3, pp 1047, 1051, 1052, 1080). Name appears Gainer and Gardner in some of these records. D at Ragersville Bur at Ragersville. MI: "Peter Ganer, 2nd Art, Cont. Troops, Rev. War." U. S. Government furnished grave marker about 12x4x36 inches in recent yrs. Dr. H. J. Peters, Civil War Veteran, was instrumental in having grave marked. Little is known about him. Not known that he had any descendants. Local report is that "after his death, his widow and adopted dau returned to Pa." His name appears on Soldiers* Memorial in Gnadenhutten Cem erected in 1927. Lived his last yrs with a dau. D Mch 29, 1868 at Hiramsburg O; aged 104 yrs. Bur Hiramsburg, O. in family graveyard, near his old home. MI: Name, dates, and "The last of Washington's companions." "The hoary head is a crown of glory." His first day's work after the war was for Gen Washington. In 1795 left Mt Vernon, for Grave Creek. About 1803 came to Noble Co., O. Could read and write. Quiet, kindly, generous, good Christian. Farmer. In 1866 Congress granted him a pens of $500. Said to be the Last Surviving Soldier of the Revolutionary War. One was Rebecca, wife of James Daniels, br Jan 21, 1786, d June 16, 1819, was the mother of Eliza D Stewart, known as "Mother Stewart" the originator of the Woman's Crusade, and 1st President of W. C. T. U. D June 1, 1823, on his farm, Pike Co. Bur Mound Cem on his original land. He is buried on the mound in center. GM Bricks and stones around the grave.
